The Dune universe continues to expand not only on the big screen but also on the small screen, with the arrival of the prequel TV series Prophecy on HBO Max. In development for the Max streaming service since 2019 under the title Dune: The Sisterhood, the series recently changed its name, thus consolidating its identity as a direct prequel to Denis Villeneuve's successful film saga. While there's no official word on a release date yet, the series is expected to make its debut between late 2024 and early 2025.
Dune: Prophecy will explore the origins of the Bene Gesserit, the mysterious elite sisterhood introduced in Villeneuve's film. The narrative of the series is set approximately 10,000 years before the events of the films, thus serving as a valuable prequel to the film saga. Produced by Legendary, the series is led by Alison Schapker as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with Denis Villeneuve remaining involved as executive producer. The cast of Dune: Prophecy boasts a roster of talent, including names like Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Marco Forte, Giada Anouka, Chris Masson, Jodhi May, and Josh Heuston. Filming took place between November 2022 and December 2023, with main locations in Budapest and Jordan.
A notable recent addition to the Dune: Prophecy cast is acclaimed Indian actress Tabu, who has been cast in a recurring role in the series. Tabu will play Sister Francesca, a strong, intelligent, and seductive character, who will leave a lasting impression on her journey and who will put the balance of power in the capital to the test. The series, after a long development process and with several changes of showrunner, is almost ready to make its debut on the screen, promising fans a deeper immersion in the complex and fascinating universe created by Frank Herbert.
