Until a few months ago, the name David Corenswet didn't ring any bells and the announcement that this young actor would play the new Superman came as a bit of a surprise last July. Yet James Gunn, who after the glories of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad is now head of all DC Studios together with Peter Safran and who will personally direct the new film on the Man of Steel, has no doubts. And he proves it by posting on his Threads profile the first official photo of Corenswet in the role of Kal El, complete with costume and standard cloak, even if to tell the truth the whole outfit seems a bit dusty. We see the protagonist sitting on an armchair intent on putting on one of his boots while in the background a threatening sphere of light destroys the entire Metropolis with its rays.

David Corenswet and the new Superman film

For Corenswet this is truly a career-defining opportunity: before this ambitious step, he had participated in two series created by Ryan Murphy for Netflix, The Politician and Hollywood, and had appeared on the big screen in the horror thriller Pearl alongside Mia Goth. Now, at 30, he must demonstrate that he has what it takes to, in fact, inaugurate a new phase within the DC Comics cinematic universe which will soon start from scratch. Certainly, as you can imagine from this image, he has a strong jaw and a well-equipped physique that are suited to such a role.

The Superman: Legacy film was recently retitled simply Sumperuman, perhaps in some way underlining Gunn's desire to raise the stakes. The rest of the cast is no exception either: together with Corenswet's announcement, it was revealed that Rachel Brosnahan, fresh from the success of the Amazon series Mrs Maisel, would play the character of Lois Lane. It was later announced that Nicholas Hoult will play the antagonist par excellence Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced (Madame Web) will be Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion (formerly The Detachable Kid in The Suicide Squad) will be Guy Gardner, a particularly sarcastic Green Lantern, and etc. Superman will arrive in theaters in July 2025, but expectations are already very high, even more so after this first preview.
